At Deer Run, we believe we have a responsibility to help develop future leaders by encouraging each camper to develop her potential. We believe that though challenging wilderness experiences and group interactions, young women are able to mature and develop as a whole person as they assume responsibility for their roles in the body of Christ. To this end, we offer a number of programs geared toward leadership development.
The BASIC Program (Brothers And Sisters In Christ) is a four-week experience for 15 and 16 year olds at Brookwoods and Deer Run. During their month at camp, teenagers will participate in co-ed team building activities in an outdoor setting. In addition to their usual camp activities, participants will spend three full days on ropes course elements guided by a trained facilitator. They will enjoy an overnight canoe trip and also face the challenges of a three-day hike in the White Mountain Range. This program is limited to the oldest 24 4-week campers (12 boys, 12 girls). There is no extra cost for this program.
The SALT program (Servant And Leadership Training) is a four-week two summer experience for 16 and 17 year old boys and girls, run out of Brookwoods and Deer Run in New Hampshire. During their month at camp, participants will participate in self-discovery through self-assessment, team building and service. The capstone of the experience is a week-long service opportunity outside of camp. This program is limited to the first 5 boys and 5 girls that meet the qualifications of the program.
The SALT program is designed to provide a continuing opportunity for Brookwoods, Deer Run and Moose River Outpost campers to be involved with the camp community and expand their faith through exploration of themselves, each other, and the meaning of service to another community. The four-week program combines team building and training experiences, with Biblical Studies in preparation for an extensive service opportunity to others.
The Leadership Development Program (LDP) centers around co-ed groups, ages 17-18, with careful attention given to personal growth and skill development. It is a 16 week program, spread over two summers. Participants are selected for the program based on a competitive application process. Program activities include backpacking, canoeing, rock climbing, rappelling, wilderness solo, group discussions and dynamics, Bible study and debriefing. Actual experience, insight, and instruction in all these activities are a major part of the program.
